Why does anybody worry about backfiring?

Hi there,

I wonder, why so many LS riders worry about the backfiring.

The usual backfiring, which you experience by lowering the trottle is really nothing you have to worry about.

The more an engine is allowed to breath free (good pipe or no pipe) the more it will backfire. It is all about Physics. When you don't have a pipe, which stops the exhaust gas flow, the outcoming gas will pull a little bit of unburned gas through the cylinder. There is a momemt in the cycle, when both, the in and out valves are open. This is just a blink of a milisecond, but it is there. It has nothing to do with carburator settings. Try it by driving out the little screw which sets the richness of the gas (the more out, the richer).

But remember I am talking about the usual backfiring. Lean gas is very harmful to the engine. The procedure of burning the gas in the cylinder will take much longer with lean gas. That could result in overhaeting the engine. Go to your local dealer and ask for the default settings for the richness screw.

I hope I deleted some concerns.

Bye, Dirk
